Attack of the Clones – How Generative AI Tools Are Redefining Phishing

Phishing has long been the bread and butter of cybercrime — a low-cost, high-reward tactic that relies on one simple truth: humans can be fooled. But as technology races ahead, so too do the tools of threat actors. With the rise of generative AI, we’re not just witnessing an evolution in phishing — we’re staring down a complete reinvention of the threat landscape. In fact, Forbes reports that social engineering attacks incorporating AI have spiked more than 1600% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to one year prior.

In this post, I’ll walk you through what’s changed, why it matters, and just how easy it’s become for attackers to fool even the most skeptical among us. At the end, you’ll find a short video showing how quickly and convincingly an attacker can clone a real-world website using a modern AI-powered tool. In this case, we used same.new to replicate our own site — Exabeam.com — but the same method could just as easily be applied to clone your bank’s login page, your company’s VPN portal, or a utility control panel for a regional power grid.

Let’s talk about how we got here.

Cloning a Website Is Now Point-and-Click

Just a few years ago, cloning a website convincingly required a decent level of technical skill — scraping images, analyzing stylesheets, tweaking layouts, debugging JavaScript. It was doable, but time-consuming and inconsistent.

Today, tools like same.new do it all in seconds. This platform automates everything: layout, color palette, fonts, images, links — even the client-side code. What you get is a near-identical replica of the original site, one that most people wouldn’t question even after deep scrutiny. For security professionals, that’s a highly concerning shift in the threat model.

In the demo video below, you’ll see a nearly perfect clone of Exabeam.com, created in about 10 minutes. Imagine, for a moment, how convincing this could be if it were your bank’s website. Or your corporate login portal. Or your LinkedIn profile. But cloning is just the beginning.

Injecting Malicious Intent: A Simple Twist

Once a threat actor has a cloned site, it takes almost no effort to weaponize it. Generative AI can be prompted to:

  • Create fake login forms that exfiltrate credentials
  • Embed malware or exploit kits into downloadable resources
  • Generate convincing error messages that direct users to call a fake “support” line
  • Insert JavaScript that steals session tokens, cookies, or MFA bypass data

What’s more, these modifications don’t require deep coding expertise. In fact, an attacker can simply describe what they want in plain language — and AI will write the code for them. The same AI can check the code for bugs, optimize it for stealth, and even recommend new attack vectors the attacker may not have considered.

This is no longer hypothetical. It’s happening.

Social Engineering, Supercharged

Phishing is as much about psychology as it is about technology. It’s about tricking someone into clicking, downloading, logging in, or trusting. Historically, that required a decent grasp of human behavior — or at least, decent writing skills.

Now Generative AI does that too.

Want a phishing email in perfect English, French, or Farsi? Done. Need it to mimic a CEO’s tone? Easy. Want it personalized with names, departments, or internal projects pulled from LinkedIn or recent data leaks? AI can write it with exceptional precision.

And with automation, this can be done at scale — hundreds or thousands of unique emails, each one tailored to its recipient, no two alike, no obvious red flags. That level of dynamic targeting used to be reserved for nation-state operations. Now, it’s available to anyone with a laptop and an internet connection.

Target Scope: From Banks to Power Grids

While most phishing still targets individuals — think banking credentials or Microsoft 365 logins — attackers are increasingly focusing on infrastructure, critical systems, and industrial controls.

Think about an HMI (Human Machine Interface) that controls water flow or electricity in a small utility provider. If that web interface is cloneable (and it often is), an attacker could intercept a legitimate login attempt and hijack access to real-world systems. We’re not talking about theoretical damage — we’re talking about taking systems offline, disrupting services, or worse.

And remember: with AI, language barriers are gone. Coding requirements are gone. The time between idea and execution is near zero.

The Real Danger: Speed, Scale, and Sophistication

The most worrying thing isn’t any single capability — it’s the combination of them.

  • Speed: What once took days or weeks now takes minutes.
  • Scale: One attacker can launch thousands of unique campaigns at once.
  • Sophistication: AI fills in the gaps — grammar, code, design, even voice.

As defenders, we’re no longer just playing catch-up. We’re trying to stop intelligent, adaptive threats created by tools that improve themselves in real time. AI doesn’t just lower the bar to entry — it erases it.

Awareness is step one. We need to stop thinking of phishing as “just another email scam” and start treating it as the highly automated, AI-enhanced threat that it has become. Security tools must evolve. So must our thinking. Phishing isn’t just an inbox problem anymore — it’s a system-wide threat that blends technical mimicry, social manipulation, and rapid deployment.
