At the Factor This Studio at DTECH 2025, Manjay Khazanchi, Global Business Development, Distribution Automation Hitachi Energy, sat down with Angela Godwin to discuss “the favorite subject of the world today,” distribution automation.

Khazanchi argues that the world is being challenged by the “three D’s” – decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization. The energy world has evolved past the era of the “simple line” of generation, transmission, and distribution, with large amounts of distributed generation coming online at the distribution level.

“That’s the first challenge which the distribution company has – to be resilient, to see how they can still supply the stable and reliable power to their customers,” Khazanchi said. “How can they reduce their outages to a point where they do not have the revenue losses, which they would suffer with the type of trippings which are happening due to these factors coming into position. So distribution automation, especially with Hitachi Energy, is something which we are leading from the forefront.”

Additionally, Khazanchi maintains that it’s time for a “completely different” type of distribution automation system which helps restore power fast and ensure there is reliable power available to the customer. Hitachi Energy provides software that can help pinpoint faults, manage outages, and provide visibility into field management of service teams.

“Hitachi Energy has proven to the customers that we can deliver the type of systems which makes them quite strong in their reliability factor and ensure that they deliver what they’re expected to deliver,” Khazanchi said.
